Blasting Applications
Blasting is a specialization for which there is no substitute in circumstances constrained by access, time, or hardness of rock.
Blasting makes excavation faster for:
- Tunnel construction, rock excavation for rail lines, foundation preparation, and removing old structures like concrete footings
How blasting works:
- An engineer assesses local geology
- Blast designers create a blasting plan that considers the hardness and composition of rock to establish hole count, depth, angle, pattern, and charge weight per hole
- Safety measures (including monitoring) are implemented to protect workers and nearby structures and equipment
- Precisely timed explosives are detonated to break up rock or earth into the desired fragmentation. Excavated material is removed and construction can continue
Specialized blasting, when done correctly, is safe, efficient, and precise. It differs from mechanical excavation, which uses heavy machinery like excavators to break up earth or rock.
