New Tunnel Construction
Creating an entirely new underground passageway.
The Process
The complex process of constructing a new tunnel begins with a careful comprehensive site evaluation that considers:
- Environmental factors such as soil condition
- Infrastructure factors like surrounding structures and utilities
Planning & Design
The planning and design phase is scrupulous and often involves many different engineering disciplines such as:
- Civil, mechanical, and geotechnical
Site excavation methods include:
- Mico TBM (Tunnel Bore Machine), drilling and blasting, or cut and cover
Ground support installation follows excavation and can include:
- Shotcrete (pneumatically applied concrete), steel ribs (arch sets or ring sets), rock bolting, mine straps, mesh, or reinforced Shotcrete
Finishing steps in the process include:
- Drainage and waterproofing, final lining and floor slab installation, MEP Installation (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing), and thorough testing & commissioning

What Is a Tunnel Inspection and Why Is It Important?
TUNNEL INSPECTION AND ASSESSMENT SERVICES
A tunnel inspection and assessment is a visual inspection of each tunnel to determine the quality and condition of the existing liner. We’ll note the different types of defects and their locations within the tunnel.
Then, based on the type of defects and the serviceability of the subdivision, LRL Construction provides a preliminary assessment of the structure and rates this structure from low priority to a high priority for recommended repairs. If repairs are warranted, we provide the types of repairs that could be performed with an order-of-magnitude cost estimate.
WHY IT WORKS
Benefits of a Tunnel Assessment
- Take care of any tunnel problems early on.
- Help your tunnel infrastructure last longer.
- Manage your budget and cut down on surprise repair costs.
THE STEPS
Inspection and Assessment Process
We inspect and assess a tunnel when a client feels that the existing structure has the potential to cause damage to the rail traffic. Usually, this entails a visual walk-through of the tunnel to assess the deterioration and to determine the need for further in-depth investigation or engineering.
