TIMBER SET REMOVAL & Steel Set Installation SERVICES
We can remove the wood from railroad tunnels to decrease fire and safety hazards.
What Is Timber Set Removal and Why Is It Important?
Back when most tunnels were constructed, chances are that it was done with timber. It was the easiest material to obtain and install back in the day, and when a tunnel was first mined, a timber set was much quicker than alternatives.
The ground quality might have also been poor, and shotcrete and other materials take time to cure, so it wouldn’t have been possible to mine as quickly if not for timber. That’s why many tunnels incorporate timber today. However, timber is a fire hazard, as it’s wood inside of a tunnel, and it can pose a safety hazard since it can rot and degrade over time. That’s why timber set removal is important (i.e., extracting wood from rail traffic or another structure).
