Part of the National Gateway Clearance Project, the Pinkerton Tunnel needed to be replaced by an alternate tunnel due to deterioration and not meeting height requirements to accommodate double stacked freight trains.
By removing the deteriorating brick arches and timber liner the 120 year old Pinkerton Tunnel would disrupt freight and passenger trains from traveling through the tunnel.
Immediate repairs were required and an alternate tunnel was constructed. LRL Construction Co., Inc. created a unique structural support system by using steel sets and applying shotcrete throughout the tunnel.
LRL Construction Co. received an award for “Outstanding Underground Project of the Year” from the American Shotcrete Association for work done on the CSX Pinkerton Tunnel Project.
